Quiccs
Quiccs Maiquez works across graffiti, illustration and toy design under the name Quiccs. He's best known for TEQ63 and the wider Bulletpunk Universe — a body of work that started with twenty hand-painted resin figures and has since traveled to conventions and gallery walls around the world.
Where it started
Quiccs grew up sketching giant robots with his older brother, Mike, drawing scenes from Voltes V long before either of them thought of it as a career. His parents — his father Teodoro, a civil engineer, and his mother Imelda, a former energy-industry executive — raised him to earn what he had, including the toys he loved as a kid. His younger sister, Luday, later joined his team, running brand and PR for the studio he'd go on to build.
Influences
His visual language draws from a specific handful of places: the loose, expressive brushwork of Van Gogh; the mecha and giant-robot anime he grew up on; French graffiti duo 123KLAN, discovered through an early online graffiti archive; and hip-hop, which shaped both his taste in music and the way he dressed. On graffiti specifically, he's said: "No matter what your accomplishments are, when it comes to graffiti, everyone is equal."
Before the toys
Quiccs studied at Ateneo de Manila University, starting in management engineering before shifting into communications technology management with graphic design electives on the side. His first professional design work was for a children's book publisher. After graduating, he freelanced, then joined Burnwater Design Studios full time — eventually becoming a managing partner there, all while keeping up a personal art practice on the side.
The turning point
In 2012, Quiccs entered a toy design contest run by Thailand-based CE Planet. His submission placed second and earned him a trip to Thailand to work alongside young toy designers from across Asia, Europe and the US. It was there he met Singaporean toy blogger Andy Heng of TOYSREVIL — a connection that pushed him toward designing his own art toys instead of working for other people's brands.
Building TEQ63
TEQ63 grew out of the three things that had shaped Quiccs most: Japanese super-robot design, hip-hop, and graffiti. The name is literal — TEQ for technique, 63 for the Philippines' country code. The first run was twenty hand-painted resin figures, fragile and imperfect, bought almost entirely by collectors in the US before he had much of a following back home.
